I hope to do better this year. She is understandably upset that her tank is dirty and she has had little time outside of it. New expensive filter on the way as I type but I figured the least I could do was bring her out. She is still very sneaky and tries to give me the slip every chance she gets. Here she is in the garden while I water the plants.Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-68826381420280668012010-05-19T12:03:00.000-07:002010-05-19T12:22:54.485-07:00Japan in MayGoing to Japan for work is always really stressful for me. This time though I was lucky that friends Julian and Mercedes had an artist residency outside of Tokyo so I went to visit them on my day off. They were a part of Hayama Art Festival and had an installation inside someone's home (called Habitable) and gave little workshops during their stay.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZd-hFyh1SIthQ4AfRATRGyaeAg9oHKqO7yqfRAheQaiJGMC30U0zqIvXTPcE21ZVzY4DpvzzIt-5NLnq1gteevDYm-3z5CqP0G795g5jvIgwJIzm16Y1IDC5QznLEP9CoEX-8OdC0rA_o/s320/May2010+014.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473059894581782178" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6S39D77eWmvNEYEPGWYYEz2jc1fcDr1P_cV1fFrvmgDCYAYDpK-nwyUAn33KOsWW9hQB_GRvRxKtqm_2FjIjbnE4lPecBWtf2H5yeauCs5jbCFDdotQGxUpQ5ZGp7VX-pNJ5EUZ7BhUSI/s320/May2010+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473059893294492050" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh90OTMX0Cfxl0cg3i31VOd2k5QKZ9W2jWVrFuc9HpghjvMYdISjqsODxsv_SXn1yV0bF5OGzddgE9gz9tb8I5AcmuuD8nPoTUoUFd4OXKxShTdWD3ZUkKjhU1Nh3dtN4CkLekLd66-W7Z/s320/May2010+019.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473059888684852962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGQNkZcbBqbg1toOlmoPbZEhsCw946z7Fw-ngfuKK3CtVVTILKZAdgQC2cLdzXET24-yclqGrNAqEOyQsEdPjIudYnu4rx87czaDTF5L5C62dcZFs25xDZw9qQkFKHtfm04xntVfaDTozE/s320/May2010+021.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473059880611318994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGvD-bQAFyLbSzU2FaPyK9Q2AjVvS4IsoHofBO-2gG0xu3e48Qsqo6-tJ3iC_pfAyb9jInSR_l076H83vIWusXC2V-9mKHEf1pN99NHkHHADFITY2LF9FIJzKmu5CQJxQD3aUuFkb7TT7T/s320/May2010+022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473059447415774466" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNosSF7zJdMpVWfVp5hJzEcmFQpFIPow_eOJC983Xnt7vUilCuHtJ5zS6LZaofrsY3xtj2ab3yyBZ3vkorG3cZX5eShkfNVpdJ9VzRnq4g8VGZNTVa-tFnlBm5DoQcDfVuQCA1h-8lkxXE/s320/May2010+027.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473059439313041138" />
We walked down to the beach and saw the sun set. I never get to be outside that much and relax when I am in Tokyo so it was a really nice break.
Another nice thing was that I got to see my half sister Maya who I haven't seen since she was in elementary school. We were driven down to JFK and although Camcam pooped while we were waiting in line to get checked in, he was overall an amazingly well behaved traveler. Once we landed in Las Vegas we rented a big SUV (with tinted windows!) that could hold both me & Camo and the huge plastic carrier he flew in. We were already getting comments about the fact that I am so small/short and the fact that Camo is so tall/big, I bet anyone seeing me climb out of the SUV (yes I had to CLIMB) would have had a good laugh. It took us four hours to drive to Kanab and we arrived at 3am.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3e0sYLek376lFGCF1PeDQpx8vprF9vC_b-Q60qKW5lpcXu9fLqpBJk6lAM9dVLGQhPOd5GgrHDDwzAWkcpVpOiYeQDcs6rKVWjSrDVmv5hweS2eH-78IugmkwWPKeCLbM6sJ02bS4WjZ_/s320/camo+trip+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454184421675078306" />
We quickly settled in to our hotel room at the Holiday Inn and went to sleep.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL2WPEWwFi60-PkapHJYeAKcVyS3wKLMRy7c3mkOOZaC4FjfmwzZHHT20iT1RI_MVykSDfyJ4qSafmcAriQeoZAgPkWcTGMWRBBZhdfg50fbPFBuTCqbF9AwY58GM-ex2ubM_SgaD0Qjl-/s320/camo+trip+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453388025390104834" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 260px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAhjyqPVtrzlU3_NnQ3LsZ5oyU58z6mO6jh-GJ7jsg3NejSJkZJ57mLbj_tBTel1GrMxDJrrkc2ZTZLd3imbtgmQKe6KRZWq0zJi9clnULebmc6tkH99ZsHKYcfCRavN_xTORs7pC1x068/s320/laid.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453395706268948498" />
In the morning we took a walk around town and stopped in a place called Laid Back Larry's for breakfast. It was perfect. They had a tofu "egg salad" sandwich so I got that and some coffee. The woman behind the counter as well as the other patrons all fussed over Camo and gave him lots of treats. There were pictures of animals all over the walls and I saw that they had lots of fake meats and vegan "dairy" products in their fridge. Awesome! Whitney, one of the trainers at BF, had fostered Camo for about 6 months previously so when he saw her he went nuts with excitement. She told me that he was originally supposed to be named "Camel" but that she thought it was weird and changed it to Camo. While we waited for the potential adopters to arrive, I got to follow a dog caregiver named Skip around for a few hours. John, a volunteer from Brooklyn, and I walked a few dogs, got to watch new dog introductions, helped put together the second daily feeding, and cleaned and washed lots of food and water bowls.

When I was done, the adopters had arrived and had already started to hang out with Camo in one of the office rooms. I showed them some of the tricks we had worked on like "spin" and weaving through my legs and I talked to them about the ins and outs of Camo-life; what he likes doing, what he doesn't like, how to get his attention, etc. I really hoped that they would connect with him. We went out to the parking lot and the family took Cam to their car and off they went for a sleep over. I got teary-eyed knowing that I would probably never see him again but was happy that he was getting a really good shot at a new home and that if it didn't work out, I had met all the people that would take care of him again at BF and they all adored him and had missed him since he had come out east a year and a half ago.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc_Av7vVCLKu2IqQTNY77cUxgE6XceZ-qv25WTMHDG82eC7JXrwc7i6YetJoYjbBjhecOzH0kptynq7J7sHJNfh_S9AkymaDzpS1ZJNrmRoYFT_5r4OacNX_o_T-Slkad0Ic_AkquxVdzd/s320/camo-trip-013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453388019713532306" />
When I finally got home after more driving and more flying, I was told that the family had fallen in love over two sleep overs and that Sherry was driving him to do the dog introductions to their current two female dogs. Good luck Camo!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4IKr3uSOvfnVfOj69JBjeS7S7Z05fGJdmmrhPBM-UC9DvreeEsuJtsx4Ua998YEI0s95BKKqiD_8TZHQBf-BuHSfuRbsCMy_4eKSeF3STgei-BGS8X7xW5TfZU2npuQM7x5cgKA6Z7F2J/s320/newani-001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453402166072250882" />
The other end to this story is that I came home to MORE animals than when I had left. Our neighbor's cockatiel who Dave agreed to watch was in the turtle room whistling away and the next day we found a very skinny kitten up the driveway screaming and wailing. She is now also housed in the turtle room in a big dog crate for the time being. Dave decided to name her Teen. More news on her very soon.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 120px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyp0Jzz2h9FMkrpqza1CDiAHoyMFIlMS1JRhX-U3ftB-zUOr7mxmO1Aj-dIbhA2oWFwfPiiBdC70h3qaic1Nud4vse8Wj0-2jCPGZLG9ffmOcctm4Np2rtTyzoBHd8UcqFlU8PPr8O6wZY/s320/newani+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453402634579284594" />Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-26905437165437910372010-03-15T18:38:00.000-07:002010-03-15T19:05:58.631-07:00Tyson & Pigeons<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 166px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju0upAg0Mrbodwow2fV5m_JI_veSDpIeN-oHKhDRT8ylAFfSoQFXp0YmmFd7jRx9uEL0WLt0T632t2gQlyVk91oGuNySe9p8IXZU60HsWik7tPeAf1C_zlfIS0ZOtYSSl-tjG46-RRGPxC/s320/tyson.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449040305646949378" />
I just read that there is going to be a new show on Animal Planet starting next year about Mike Tyson and flying/racing pigeons. I'm excited that people are going to get to see a side of pigeons that they probably never saw before but since I've rescued (and many others have rescued) banded homers that owners didn't care to have back because they never made it home by themselves, my excitement is tinged with a little apprehension. I know that Mike Tyson has been known for a long time to be a big pigeon fancier as I read in Andrew Blechman's "Pigeons :The Fascinating Saga of the World's Most Revered and Reviled Bird" but I wonder what the show will really be like. I wonder if they are doing homers or tipplers or flights....... I always miss seeing pigeons now that we live out in the country. Here are some pictures of my past pigeon friends....

Manuel - my first pigeon love RIP
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 263px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtN7WsD1ZcYL8mOHqth9YKW9mBRRjMPj1fglslYPPA4WURGoyFnOOTc4j7C4VE5A7T26rwZEnbDLKRVjVYzx8QJnSq4r7tHdKgfbf98riV1EaLO1mW8BZfzZ3ktctY0U-2cZMqV2b2yhTV/s320/manuel3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449045491211804018" />
Falafel - (banded NY Flight) who I fostered and got into a home with a rich florist
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh3DgX3x6IuefZgJjREhSDCx0_Kn5fogwzvlycs6txL11NVC1cf8SGM-hZ4kTRpKrhI58M8dXM2Y7eNy5ku23bvlbJAp_eK3XkuRenoE8Qqn2PlTNLkjFLOCPB3WeCbJYIRqw78BQOSpfc/s320/falaf.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449045379135718226" />
Mr Midtown - (banded Homer) who I gave to a woman who keeps pigeons on her balcony in Tribeca
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmpGlEqabKknRYrjthO9CLBSArqTy1vllv93simAj_5dzc_aA4KLt1cZ_3By_3fJSs8VdKufot2gWlQxBDiOPArEFFwYfH5rF6iDwx5EKq1Eod4BTJRwp7mh86mvoEv3VjEqiTQQ25bf5i/s320/mm.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449045280648218834" />
Sprite, Stumpy, and Sonny - a family of pigeons I fed every morning in my backyard on 6th street
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieVjIPxONGBq9F_9MVP2aTuLUEfGNv6fgkZkS_83oI7ylgFoYmE7MKaNVZgqGjLrEk1wOM_BN6RgAxQk6biTWaLy0o59-vL5Vfqdh02T1PacowyAPk0wY8ORI5jIzc5vLaljyIZz0vfjOq/s320/sss.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449045179755434482" />Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-59014703424377476222010-03-12T14:22:00.000-08:002010-03-12T15:32:42.679-08:00Mind games with Coleman!I meant to post a video of Coleman playing with his Nina Ottosson puzzle a long time ago and never got around to it so here it is now.

Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-22278451377569612252010-03-07T09:53:00.000-08:002010-03-07T10:05:16.887-08:00Spring is coming?Today is warm enough that we ate lunch outside. I made a teriyaki tofu burger which Coleman wanted for himself. I wanted to spread compost in the garden but both compost piles are still mostly frozen so I'll have to wait on that a little while longer. I started my onion seeds so the gardening season is off to its 2010 start.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnQAxNgn5rSGeCZGYJOG4npDOmJCdzwK-r7mO_zwaxn-uR1bt5Z6CfaSUmzRXnRchXcXas20B27sEye3e_sgp1OfcsC9WbFmJUmTmcynnuISFMCrY-OBPDN7lLBmFbj4yGg-CSkgKxTNY-/s320/burger+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445952451147057922" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyBZzBHpF6vQJVlpGzheSiJAsWP2XxxcdbonpD28UgaqsOsMGSVazh3RR7XcBOzjK__0B4XwsvFqPrmy71ou9bbr4oErHWntoEy4sfJB7JmRLaO1PYf1smDMidDN1LsupJ5tHcCgGlX1DX/s320/burger+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445953852817276578" />Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-49717074710489823122010-02-27T12:24:00.000-08:002010-02-27T12:37:58.680-08:00Dreary Dayz<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 167px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYgsiBrOggOAtCG6ScA4vFAsyPXv8rpHdm6yxIkJB15vRcUKmW8oHoX28Xp_642Q4Hw__n6HYQ-HEuieyVJDvH4cjShHC_q2pChCTLzwSfuU7YJZfLdW_zIcn3Vg_Ch_no9RFsx1ohPKaV/s320/out+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443022412633965122" />
Snowing and raining for the past five days. We spent the day transporting our buddy Benson from Animal Farm Foundation to Saddleback Pet Services in New Hampshire. It took about 4 1/2 hours one way but we stopped in Greenfield, MA on the way there for a pit-stop. Dave wanted to stop there because that is where his Vipassana meditation center is and he likes to feel the vibes.....
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmu74PF9WLIG0zWgPP2ITmZwam7nU1g9aqh-UJ8tDo7CJZRt4CBATu2IZWuDRXS7h3WtAuO714oyGT-xsNiBYtvLc3BpzR6drZkEIVdIrtt9KqyOf42wQfAzLYQkXCohsgyXlhBzFWn0nu/s320/benny+006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434858858232658258" />
Benny was a good passenger and slept most of the time. When we got to NH he made himself at home and jumped on the couch and tore up a stuffy toy. I hope he gets adopted out soon and that in the summer they take him swimming. Benson has a great cannon ball.
On our way home we had a birthday dinner in Brattleboro, VT at Shin-La, a Korean/Japanese food restaurant that somehow I make it to every 4-5 years. I want them to have appropriate diets that are not based on my beliefs but that are based on what they need and what is good for them individually.
Cats are carnivores. I know that there are a few vegan cat food products that have Taurine and vitamin D that come from vegan sources but until I can find someone that can really show me that cats can thrive on a plant based diet, it seems way too risky to me. Plus as anyone with cats knows.... how picky they can be to the point of enormous aggravation on the part of their humans. How the hell do you get a cat to eat a plant based diet anyway? <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieSleTNE0kU8fQ8lkfNWdJQHK0B0rpAk0VVtoJsoVCPNDOiu7JkDiR8ZcoRkZqIsVu89DJWxc5mi3pVtAaKS8ZsyTkRNbuS-HDCGgspdUsHct6PcYJpdwEGOMWKRw6283ZNzzVjoC0Bp7U/s320/yourcat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412546835535609794" />Since my last post on trying to figure out a raw meat based diet for the cats, I read a book called "Your Cat" by Elizabeth Hodgkins DVM which is a really good book if you are interested in cat nutrition. She suggests a product called Platinum Performance to be mixed with meat and bone to round out all the vitamins and minerals that they need and we have been trying this for the past few months and I believe it has been going very well. The cats don't mind the mix and they all seem to be doing well on it so far and it is economical, especially now that we bought the big bucket. Our main cat meal consists of the Platinum Performance added to Oma's Pride ground chicken necks with some Oma's Pride ground beef organ mix mixed in. It is the most economical and well liked meal for all the cats. (Some are more picky than the others) We also give them whole chicken necks cut in half or thirds about once a week to chew on for their teeth and gums. It's pretty gross that I have all these animal parts in the fridge, probably even more than meat eating humans with no pets to feed, but I do believe it is best for them. The fact that everything is basically bi-product from animals slaughtered for their more desirable parts like chicken breasts is a small consolation. (for me, not for the animals slaughtered of course....) We also go all the way in to Massachusetts about once a month to buy Hare-Today products that have little packages of ground meats and organs all mixed into one. Their products contain more variety of organs in their mixes (brains, kidney, and tripe anyone?) and since it's all mixed with the meat and bone, much easier for me. Plus the grounds are very fine so the cats ingest all the bone they are supposed to eat without eating around the small bone shards in the Oma's. The cats that had a little bit of "chub" have thinned out and they are not as "addicted" to the food as they were when were were giving them a larger portion of canned food. We still use canned food to put medication in and as a back up for when we forget to defrost a pack of meat but we use it sparingly.
What do you feed your cat?Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-17956541178869631372009-11-27T11:49:00.000-08:002009-11-27T13:48:14.201-08:00Grandpa's medals<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuRvUGfEa2QCh5z0wl6U1jj_wuv-9fgZ41n7pucfBtBlttc0i0-rkNtkNjwCzWR0oj7L46Cq9Blhfb-CtvZRqvLZk2RrxzH648tNV9yRdiPICdL2NBH9VAdI0p2k6f8gkWda59UcriC3fh/s320/merit+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408875296994525138" />
On the left "Zuihoushou" - Order of the Sacred Treasure medal. The smaller one I think was given to him in the 50's and the larger one in the late 80's or early 90's.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpPUTpBJWeiy3MqAOzdaJJF549AdcZX341PalUQs5P5-PsG1yNANfDO8Ssd4rP-82bMITBreqVwcahSUrf5jgrS6vLwAYG7RUnSIyQyV3mcyxhRIeLM5dFZvlsR2TDWf29GrKgiXjAPHEz/s320/grand.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408901372564392242" />

I don't know if you can see in the photo but there are offerings in front of my grandfather's picture of a persimmon, a Japanese pear, and a small "omanju-" Japanese sweet. He had a sweet tooth and loved to eat. I remember one day when I was in elementary school, I was visiting their house and we heard the "yaki imo" charcoal roasted sweet potato truck out on the street, the recorded singing coming out of the megaphone on top of the truck sort of like the annoying songs that replay over and over again on ice cream trucks. My grandpa shot up and grabbed his wallet and ran out the door in his slippers to try to catch it, then came back with a smoking hot sweet potato wrapped in aluminum foil. I always thought it was funny because to the general public he was always a very high class kind of guy but things like this made him normal and real and just a funny grandpa.Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877344414037041164.post-11032446264154204162009-11-22T11:06:00.000-08:002009-11-22T11:25:49.513-08:00It's a doggie Christmas here<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJjvRk9GqTfkhLdA55FBEU1GW0cLK_mOYrmOcnlUCmcy0vtJnIQOcCzTkNTa75YvzD5up6CF3RIJCzJuwGJo67LcqO5uakUhjqJ8ABa21pocKb_4UpJD_whhu92wq13n1R64lw-CI1fEmq/s320/otto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407007001938948210" />
I have been wanting to buy one of these Nina Ottoson dog puzzles for a while now but never could justify spending the money on one as they are not cheap. But the planets have aligned and we've bought our first puzzle! My mother gave me some money to specifically buy something fun for myself so this is what I spent it on.
We bought our "Dog Trubble" at Hooked on Dogs today and have already tried it out. Coleman has to move the hollow wooden pegs to one end of the puzzle for the pegs to be able to be overturned and the treats to be revealed. Coleman got the hang of it quickly, pawing at the pegs and pushing them with his nose but doesn't really understand yet that they will ONLY come loose at one end. Right now it's sort of more like by accident that they end up in the right place. Our only problem right now is that he plays so enthusiastically that sometimes the pegs go flying across the room when he gets them to the right spot and then the treats go flying too and then we have to try to find them. (another level to the game?) Also the puzzle wants to slide all over the place on our hard wood floors so I have to figure something out. I put them on his blanket but that moves around too.
So yeah, it's sort of like Christmas over here with such a nice present that I've wanted for so long!Hannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346719318012621634noreply@blogger.com0
